On February 1, marking five years since the military coup in Myanmar, the Taiwan Alliance for Myanmar will hold a “Solidarity with Myanmar’s resistance on the coup’s five-year anniversary Press Conference” to speak out for democracy in Myanmar. The event also calls on the Taiwanese government, which has claimed support for Myanmar’s democracy since the coup yet taken no concrete action, to stop shirking responsibility and immediately guarantee the rights of Myanmar asylum seekers.
Speakers at the event will include representatives from the Taiwan Alliance for Myanmar, Myanmar nationals living in Taiwan, and multiple human rights organizations. An on-site performance action will also be staged to highlight the lack of substantive assistance from the Taiwanese government and the desperate situation faced by Myanmar asylum seekers in Taiwan, who have been left with nowhere to turn for help.
This Sunday (2/1) marks the fifth year since the Myanmar coup, yet the military’s perse cution and atrocities against dissidents and civilians continue unabated. Since the coup on February 1, 2021, the Myanmar military has arrested and imprisoned more than 30,000 political prisoners and waged war against civilians, resulting in at least 2,200 civilian deaths and the displacement of millions. To date, the military has paid no price for its crimes. Most recently, on January 26, it even announced that it had “won” an internationally unrecognized, self-staged, and entirely illegitimate sham election, attempting to transform itself from a violently seized military regime into a so-called elected government. The people of Myanmar continue to suffer, but the international community looks away.
The Taiwanese government, which claims to be a champion of human rights and democracy, has failed to provide substantial assistance to Myanmar’s asylum seekers. Although the Legislative Yuan passed a resolution in 2021 supporting Myanmar’s democracy and human rights and offering necessary assistance, the temporary asylum program passed in 2023 has made no progress to date. As a result, Myanmar nationals are left helpless, with
the risk of returning to their home country rising.

Since the coup, people from Myanmar living in Taiwan have never ceased resisting and continue to speak out for Myanmar’s democracy. On February 1, the fifth anniversary of the coup, the Taiwan Alliance for Myanmar will gather near Myanmar Street at Nanshijiao MRT Station to demonstrate the unwavering determination of the Myanmar people to pursue democracy and overthrow military dictatorship. The alliance again urges the Taiwanese government to keep its promises and protect the rights of Myanmar asylum seekers.
